AMA’s 100th Anniversary History Spotlight: President’s Cruise

By Meaghan Archer

In 1989, AMA set sail into specialized travel with the launch of our first President’s Cruise — an exclusive trip that marked the start of a cherished decades-long tradition. The unique experience saw us invite members of 25 years or longer to enjoy a 10-day discounted Caribbean cruise hosted by AMA ambassadors and then-president George MacDonald. Not only did they enjoy the ship’s amenities, events and dining, they forged friendships and memories to last a lifetime.

Over the many President’s Cruise voyages that followed, members celebrated personal milestones — wedding anniversaries, birthdays and more — alongside their AMA family. Our team ensured every request, whether a surprise celebration or spontaneous excursion, was met with enthusiasm, making member satisfaction the heart of every journey. In fact, the hosted trips made such a splash, AMA Travel launched an entire dedicated division to plan and execute specialized tours, cruises and vacations.

Members could now explore destinations across Europe, India, South America, China and more with the peace of mind of having AMA lead the experience. But we never lost sight of the emotional significance of the President’s Cruise for our members. Guests who bonded on the cruises often continued their adventures together. Their feedback helped shape future offerings, including customized group experiences and solo-travel packages for those seeking the comfort of a trusted travel group.

Even now, 35 years later, invitations are still sent to members to join AMA President Michelle Chimko aboard exclusive hosted cruises. Our club’s leadership may have changed, but our core value of members-first travel remains unwavering.

In 2025, Chimko and her husband, Regan, will host a group of AMA members on a luxurious 18-night cruise across the Baltic Sea. It promises to be another unforgettable chapter in AMA’s legacy of extraordinary travel.
