Kevin Mohan's 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe

Check Out This AMA Member’s First Car

“It was red and running,” Edmontonian Kevin Mohan says of his first car, a candy-apple red 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe. “That’s all my 17-year-old self needed—a cool car with a loud stereo!” Some four decades ago, the AMA member recalls spotting an ad for the car in the local paper. “It was the kind of car teenage dreams are made of. So I scraped together the $1,300 from my part-time job. And there may have been a loan from my mom too!” For the next two years, Mohan and a buddy set to work modifying his ride with a bigger motor, sport tires and chrome rims. “When it was done, I drove it to California for the 1982 Street Machine Nationals,” he says. “I still have the window sticker and program from that car show.”

Though Mohan sold his beloved ’65 Mustang after five years, it wasn’t goodbye forever. He bought it back a few years later—before finally parting ways for good in 1990. His time with the car left a lasting impression. The self-professed gear head currently owns a 1965 Mustang Fastback and a 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe. But that first Mustang is never far from his thoughts. “I keep a big glossy photo of that red beauty hanging in my garage.”

AMA member Kevin Mohan lives in Edmonton. He remains passionate about cars and spends his free time in the garage.
