AMA News: Spring 2022

A ROAD TO EXCELLENCE

AMA Members’ journey to AMA Kingsway will now include a cruise along Don Smitten Way, a street behind the centre recently named after our former CEO. A lifelong Edmontonian, Don dedicated his career to the betterment of local roads and communities.

“Don’s name signals so much of what Alberta is about: stewardship, community service, and looking out for our neighbours,” says Michelle Chimko, AMA president and CEO. “To have the city recognize his contributions with such a huge honour should make us all proud.”

Over his esteemed 41-year career at AMA, Don established himself as a leader in traffic safety, consumer advocacy and helping the province’s most vulnerable. In 2020 alone, he rallied staff and members to raise a record-breaking quarter of a million dollars through AMA’s Fill Our Fleet campaign.

Likewise, Don empowered AMA employees to volunteer in areas of need. They donate close to 13,000 employee hours annually to community outreach initiatives.

“Don’s pursuit of excellence, and of what’s right, is driven by a desire to make things better for all Albertans,” Chimko says. “And he has certainly achieved that.”

LEARNING JOURNEY

Earning a driver’s licence isn’t easy, but AMA is pleased to help you at every stage of your driving journey. Beginners can gain confidence to ace the Class 7 knowledge test with our Learner’s Licence Prep course. Later, enrol in one of AMA’s comprehensive New Driver programs—with in-person, virtual classroom, online and/or in-vehicle training. An experienced and patient instructor will help you develop the practical skills you’ll need for a lifetime of safe driving. Graduates can then save up to $200 on an AMA auto insurance policy. And if you’re a fully licensed motorist looking to improve, our suite of online courses and in-vehicle brush-up lessons can help refresh your driving abilities. Visit ama.ab.ca/Driving-School to register.

SPRING TIRE SWAP

When the winter snow finally starts melting and it’s time to tuck away your winter boots, it’s also time to think about swapping out your winter tires. And you don’t even have to leave home to do it. AMA’s Mobile Tire Change service is now available to all members in Calgary, Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and Red Deer. Book a time that works for you at ama.ab.ca/TireChange, and we’ll do the heavy lifting of swapping your on-rim tires. Premier members save $36, while Plus members save $22 off the member rate.

WHATEVER YOUR PLATE, KEEP IT UP TO DATE

Service Alberta has stopped issuing licence plate stickers. If you’ve relied on the sticker to remind you of your vehicle registration’s expiry, signing up for AMA’s Vehicle Registration Auto-Renew now makes more sense than ever. Register at ama.ab.ca/Automatic or visit an AMA centre. The start of your last name determines your registration’s expiry.
