ATTEND A MARIACHI MASS
Held every Sunday at noon, “Mariachi Mass” at San Antonio’s San José Mission features a 10-person mariachi band and a choir within the stone walls of the 1782 church.

MEDITATE IN A PAGODA
Take a free meditation class at Mumbai’s golden Global Vipassana Pagoda. The spectacular gilded dome is devoted to Vipassana meditation, popular among Buddhists.

SMELL THE ROSES IN PORTLAND
Stop and smell the roses at the International Rose Test Gardens. Take a gratis gander at more than 10,000 fragrant blooms. The park was originally conceived as a safe haven for rose varietals that were being cultivated in Europe during World War I.

SNORKEL IN SYDNEY’S ROCK POOLS
Rock pools are fully or partially enclosed watering holes built into the ocean, either by nature or humans. Many are free to access and home to colourful fish species. The best bets to spot Aussie sea life: Clovelly or Mahon pools.

PEDAL THE PALACE
Cycle around Tokyo’s Imperial Palace: On Sundays, you can borrow a bike, free of charge, to tour the estate course. Or grab a tandem bike to try some two-person two-wheeling around the three-kilometre route.

WALK IN THE POPE’S FOOTSTEPS
In Buenos Aires, take a free tour of Pope Francis’s old stomping grounds, including the house where he was born and his elementary school.

MIND THE MONA LISA
Ogle Da Vinci’s masterpiece without an entrance fee on the first Sunday of the month (October to March) at the Louvre in Paris.

SEE SINGAPORE
Enjoy a guided city tour during a travel layover. The Changi Airport offers free city tours on layovers longer than 5.5 hours.

SAY HELLO TO LADY LIBERTY
Get an up-close view of the Statue of Liberty aboard the free Staten Island Ferry. While it’s more commuter vehicle than sightseeing cruise, you will still float by incredible views of the glitzy Big Apple skyline.

PEEK AT PICASSOS
Glimpse works by Picasso, Pollock and other contemporary creators at London’s Tate Modern. Like most museums and galleries in the city, entry is free. The Tate recently underwent an extensive makeover, including renovated and expanded spaces. Other must-sees include Cadeau by Man Ray and Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Diptych.
