When helpers need help: The Jasper Food Bank

By AMA Staff

If ever there was a cruel summer, it was the one we experienced in 2024. From the devastating wildfires in Jasper to golf ball-sized hail in Calgary, tens of thousands of Albertans experienced profound personal and financial losses. In fact, it was the most challenging summer on record for damage from weather events and natural disasters in Canada.

Places and property are so much more than meets the eye; they’re where we plant our roots, create cherished memories, and make safe spaces for the ones we love.

Almost as soon as these disasters occurred, people were mobilizing to support affected friends and neighbours, showing just what it means to be “Alberta strong.” From the grit of frontline firefighters and emergency responders to Albertans’ generosity in donating to relief efforts, to the countless hours of claims teams supporting the recovery process, it was incredibly inspiring.

However, sometimes even the helpers need help.

Rising from the ashes

The Jasper Food Bank Society tragically lost their building to the wildfire and is now starting over, with the support of Food Banks Alberta. And they aren’t alone in their need.

The frightening reality is that many households are just one unexpected crisis away from financial ruin. These are our community’s young people, families, veterans, seniors, and everyone in between.

In fact, food banks across the province see nearly 173,000 visits every month, with children representing more than a third. That’s more than a 90% increase since 2019.

Thanks to the generosity of Albertans like you, our Fill Our Fleet campaign for food banks raised $322,516.54—including $100,000 in AMA matching—along with 42,000 lbs of food in 2024

Life will continue to test us in unexpected ways. But together, Albertans will heal from hardship and emerge even stronger. We always do.
