How AMA Members are connecting with the community app

By Lisa van de Geyn

Calgarian and AMA member Ron Dreyer isn’t just active in his local community — he’s also fully engaged in two of AMA’s online communities and has been contributing to Cost Cutters and Smart Traveller since March 2023.

Dreyer has benefitted from information that the groups share and he likes sharing some of his favourite destinations, too. “I enjoy the social interaction. In Cost Cutters, I often announce upcoming sales at supermarkets to fellow members, for example. People on the app are always positive and appreciative of the information that’s shared.”

There are four vibrant groups, and according to Krystal Maharaj, AMA’s online community specialist, each was developed to provide highly useful info to Albertans. These bustling communities are the perfect platform for members to “connect with others who share similar interests in a moderated, protected space,” she says. “Fostering these groups is essential for creating a supportive and dynamic environment that really adds value to the AMA membership.” Wondering what you’ll find in each online community? Read on, download the app, join the groups you’re most interested in and start sharing.

Smart Traveller

Aimed at frequent flyers, this community has subgroups for members, including those who enjoy cruising, travelling with kids or solo adventures. “Some of AMA’s travel experts are very active here and love sharing their knowledge on the places they’ve visited,” says Maharaj. Smart Traveller also offers insider tips and recommendations for destinations, accommodations and local attractions.

Cost Cutters

“Cost of living is top of mind for many Albertans and we want to create a space where members can share their discount finds and savings tips,” she says. This group will help you find deals and learn how members are taking advantage of savings. “We get lots of tips on stacking offers, using credit card points, gift cards with cash-back bonuses and store rewards cards.”

EV Life

Join this community to connect with fellow electric-vehicle enthusiasts. “This group is so supportive,” she notes. “We have members who’ve owned EVs for a few years now and they love answering questions about range, cost, batteries and more.”

HelloAlberta

Geared to newcomers learning about life in the province, this space allows a diverse group of people to connect, says Maharaj. “It’s touching to see people experience for the first time the Alberta we love. It’s also nice to connect them with home, whether it’s a festival celebrating their heritage or a shop that sells goods from back home. We love bridging the two worlds.”
