Things to do in Alberta: September 2024

By Meaghan Archer

As we wind down from August and set our sights on September, there are still a few summer moments left to soak up. Don’t let the last bits of sunlight  slip from your fingers.

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

Commemorate the history of residential schools in Canada, with National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. Communities and organizations will be observing across the province in their own way through Indigenous ceremonies, film viewings, storytelling, art showcases, and more. Keep an eye out for events happening in your community.

Flick Festival

Settle into your seats for locally made films and international sensations at the Edmonton International Film Festival running at several theatres across the city from September 26 to October 5. Live in the south half of the province? No worries. Calgary is hosting its own version of the film festival September 19-29 for film buffs. Watch a vast selection of Canadian and Indigenous films showcasing an array of voices, including documentaries, contemporary world cinema and short films.

Soak Up the Sun and Sounds

Make the most of the remaining light-filled  nights with an outdoor concert featuring the Calgary Philharmonic. From Tchaikovsky x  Drake, A tribute to Pink Floyd, and Babar the Elephant, there is a musical experience for everyone. Plus, AMA Members save 15% on tickets for Philharmonic concerts.

See the Circus

Don’t miss your chance to visit the circus as it makes its way through the province. Stopping in Medicine Hat, Saint Albert, Edmonton, Sherwood Park and Red Deer, the Cirque Italia is bringing its Water Circus Gold show to Albertans. Experience the magic of the circus, featuring music, acrobats, jugglers—the works! Tickets are available online.

Up, Up and Away

Take up into the beautiful blue Alberta skies at the Heritage Inn International Balloon Festival in High River. From September 25-29, participate in workshops, flight ceremonies and competitions, and an indescribable sunset Balloon Glow that you have to be at to believe. For a full list of events, visit the event website.
