Things to do in Alberta: October 2024

By Meaghan Archer

Spooky season is here, which means fall fairs, crisp leaves and Halloween!

Gourd big or go home

The Great White North Pumpkin Fair in Smoky Lake is the perfect kickoff to fall. Starting off strong with a pancake breakfast, spend the rest of the day visiting the farmer’s market, beer gardens, and watching live entertainment—but not before finding your way through the corn maze. Don’t forget to check out the main attraction: the great pumpkin weigh-off! The fair runs Oct. 4-6 and admission is free.

Paranormal activity

Get haunted at Mystic Manor! The old Robertson House in High River (where Superman was once filmed) sets the stage for some spooky paranormal exploration. You can choose your own adventure at the Manor, where tours, a café, and escape rooms are ready for you to play in. Doors open to the public starting Oct. 1. Make sure you book your spot for a scary adventure.

What a show

Head to Fort Saskatchewan, just outside of Edmonton, for a weekend of theatre, live performances and professional development with the Alberta Showcase. The weekend of Oct. 25-27 is all about performing arts, with huge lineups of both well-seasoned performers and emerging artists. Workshops for everyone in the business of presenting live public performances are also being put on by the Arts Touring Alliance of Alberta. All registration options are available online.

Twinkle, twinkle

Escape the city and head to Elk Island National Park for some dark sky gazing. Every Friday and Saturday in September and October, the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve hosts Gateway to the Stars, an introductory stargazing program. Use star charts to locate major constellations visible in the fall’s clear night sky and hear cultural stories about the constellations around a campfire. Registration is open online.

I ain’t afraid

Time to pull your Flight Suit out of the closet—we’re going to see some ghosts! In Edmonton, take a ghost tour of Old Strathcona, the University of Alberta, or the Haunted Trolley. Further south, listen to the spine-chilling stories of haunted buildings, mysterious apparitions and unexplained phenomena in Calgary’s Heritage Park

Disco, divas and dining

Fall isn’t just gold and orange; Banff is bringing the full rainbow! Come celebrate Pride in the iconic National Park, which hosts its annual celebration Oct. 4-14. From live entertainment to curated food events and a unique speaker series, there’s fun for everyone.
