Things to do in Alberta: March 2025

By Meaghan Archer

Savour the remaining days of winter while enjoying some very Canadian outdoor activities, like dog sledding and pond hockey. And don’t worry if you prefer the comforts of the indoors—there’s something on this list for everyone.

Raise a Glass

Join fellow beer lovers and brewers alike at the Edmonton Craft Beer Festival March 7-8. With a variety of ticket offers, including VIP section access, early entry and sample tokens, there are good-time options for every malt beverage connoisseur. And make sure to stick around for the after parties and take in the sounds of stacked musical lineups. AMA members save 30% on general admission and VIP tickets, and 20% on Beerfest packages. Note: this offer expires February 28, 2025.

Controlled Burn

Fuel your spirit at the Calgary Philharmonic as Cree artist Cris Derksen stars in Controlled Burn, a piece inspired by the traditional Indigenous practice used to control wildfires—flames transforming from threat to tool. The performance’s Calgary debut is March 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. AMA members save 15% on tickets for concerts.

Who’s Walking Who?

Dog sledding is a northern cultural classic—but what about human dog sledding? Pass Powderkeg Ski Hill in Blairmore is calling teams to “Mush!” again with the Human Dog Sled Race. Free and open to teams of three (participants must 10-years or older) in the categories of Kids (10-12), Teen (13-17), Adult (18+) and Family (any combination of the first three categories). Compete against each other like the dog sledding teams of the north for your team’s chance to win a prize. Registration opens February 22.

Out for a rip on the pond

There are few things more quintessentially Canadian than a good ol’ game of pond hockey, let alone a tournament! For three days starting March 7, the Alberta Pond Hockey Championships will be in full swing at the Lac Cardinal Recreation Centre in Grimshaw. And there’ll be more fun activities to partake in while there, like ringette, stick curling or dogsledding. Head up to the Peace River region of Alberta for some classic Canadian winter fun. Team registration and full event schedules can be found online.
