Things to do in Alberta: February 2025

By Meaghan Archer

With the biggest chunk of winter behind us, celebrate the last remaining chilly month (knock on wood) with outdoor festivals, concerts and cultural events.

Legend Has It…

Celebrate the end of January and beginning of February with a classic Edmonton winter festival: Flying Canoe Volant. Nestled in the heart of Mill Creek Ravine and the French Quarter, explore local artists, indoor and outdoor stages, winter patios and cafes, and entertainment for the whole family. After sundown, bask in the glow of light installations along the Mill Creek trails, and take part in French and First Nations cultures.

Turn up the Heat

For those down in Calgary, the Block Heater festival returns to the East Village for another two nights of roots, blues and folk music. The winter sister to Calgary Folk Fest returns for its tenth year February 14-15 with both outdoor concerts and stage shows. View the full lineup, schedule and purchase tickets online.

Métis Crossing

Immerse yourself in Métis heritage for a day at Métis Crossing in Smoky Lake. Participate in cultural activities used in traditional and modern Métis culture and learn about the land and shared history at the Historic Village. For those interested in a longer stay, lodging and retreat packages are available to get the full Métis cultural experience.

Champions of Ice

Talk about extreme sports! For four days, from February 27 to March 2, Edmonton is hosting the annual Climb YEG (formerly YEG Ice Fest) and UIAA Ice Climbing World Championships. Watch the opening ceremonies plus three days of competition for free at Lousie McKinney Park. Plus, don’t miss the live entertainment, food vendors, family-friendly activities, awards and after-parties. The full schedule is available online.

Chocolate Delight

It’s a chocolate-lover’s dream-come-true at the YYC Hot Chocolate Fest. Pouring the entire month of February at participating cafes across the city, proceeds from each specially made drink will go towards Calgary Meals on Wheels. Have a favourite savoury sip? Customers can vote online for their favourite café/beverage to determine the winner of Calgary’s “Best Hot Chocolate.”
