Things to do in Alberta: August 2024

By Meaghan Archer

Lac La Biche Summer Days

Start the month off right with Lac La Biche’s biggest community festival of the summer, August 2-5. Look forward to a community fish-fry, Indigenous market, midway rides, slo-pitch tournament, live music and a delicious pancake breakfast. And don’t forget to bring your lawn chair and candy-catching mitts for the parade.

Feeling Fringe-y?

Get ready to be seriously entertained at the Edmonton International Theatre Fringe Festival. For 10 days (August 15-25) in the heart of Old Strathcona (with other events happening throughout the city as well), share laughs, tears and pure joy with fellow Edmontonians and performers from all over. Buy a season pass to attend as many shows as your heart desires, or single tickets for individual shows. The Fringe also has a Pay What You Will program encouraging everyone to come out to a show, no matter what they can offer for a ticket.

Stoke Up the Grill

Feel like your grilling skills are up to snuff? Then look no further than the 33rd annual BBQ on the Bow at the Calgary Shrine Stables. Register your team for the cookoff, or yourself as a judge (hello, samples!), and end the summer with a great taste in your mouth. From August 31 – September 1, open your tastebuds to a world of possibility.

Mud Slinging

Head to Cold Lake for a week of Extreme Mudfest, August 14-19. Watch the filthiest races around as mega trucks, rock crawlers, quads and even Barbie Jeeps rip through the mud and dirt. When you’re ready to move on from the hot wheels, hit up the extreme bull-riding shows, charity run, and live concert. To register for an event or buy tickets to watch the show, head to their website.

A Little Old Fashioned

Hear ye, hear ye! Experience a renaissance this summer at the Calgary Medieval Faire. Jaunt over to Strathmore the weekend of August 23-25 to join in the merriment of mediaeval times. Watch jousting tournaments and skills at arms (swordfights), tour the Artisan Market for goods, be amazed by magicians, and hook arms for song and dance. Don’t forget to dress to impress—Saturday’s costume competition will have quite the prize.
