Your Marriage Licence & More: What to Do Before “I Do”

By AMA Staff

To ensure your wedding goes off without a hitch, make sure you get your paperwork in order.

ALBERTA MARRIAGE LICENCE
This is your licence to wed, and it’s valid for 90 days from the date of issue in Alberta. To obtain one, both members of a couple must apply in person at a registry office. At AMA Registries, you’ll each need your AMA membership card, one piece of government-issued ID with your current legal name and address, and divorce certificates if applicable.

EVENT LIABILITY INSURANCE
The last thing you want is to be on the hook for millions if you’re found legally responsible for damages or injuries sustained during your wedding. Choose from liability limits up to $5 million, bodily injury and property damage liability, host liquor liability and more.

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE
You apply for this after the wedding to prove you’re legally married. Members can apply at any AMA Registries office by presenting their membership card, one piece of personal ID and a completed marriage-document application.

NAME CHANGE APPLICATION
If you choose to change your name after getting married, AMA can help you update your driver’s licence, vehicle registration, Alberta Health Care, AMA Insurance documents and membership card.
