Things to Do in Alberta: May 2026
May in Alberta feels like a reset: the patios open, bikes come out of storage, and communities all over host outdoor events to take advantage of the warming weather. Whether you’re looking for a date night or a family outing, here are some great ideas to enjoy Alberta this May.
Pedal Into Spring
If you’re thinking about getting back on two wheels this spring or are just looking to upgrade your ride—check out Alberta Bike Swap events! These events aren’t just a typical buy-and-sell; they’re community-driven and focused on making cycling more accessible for everyone. All the bikes at Bike Swap events have been checked over for safety by professionals and are also verified as legitimate and non-stolen.
Check out Bike Swap in Calgary on Saturday, May 2, at Vivo for Healthier Generations (East Arena). Meanwhile, Edmonton’s Bike Swap event takes place Saturday, May 9, at the Alberta Aviation Museum Event Hall.
At both Alberta Bike Swap events, AMA members get $5.00 off the racking fee!
And remember, your AMA membership includes the AMA Bike Assist Program. With this program, you can use a service call to get help with basic maintenance like a flat tire or bike chain issues, or AMA will take you and your bike home or to a repair shop.
Watch a Movie Under the Sky
As the temperature heats up, what better opportunity to get the nostalgia running and check out a drive-in movie in a charming Alberta village? Donalda is hosting a Willow Canyon Drive-In showing of Cool Runnings on May 9. The gates and concessions open at 7 p.m., and the movie will start at dusk (around 9:00 or so). It’s a great excuse for a trip to Donalda, which also features the “World’s Largest Lamp” that glows every evening. All are welcome, and for more information about the screening, email the Donalda Promo Society directly.
Brews and Bites
Get ready for something lively this May! The Calgary International Beerfest returns May 1-2 with a massive tasting experience for beer-drinkers and foodies alike. Hosted by ABF, expect hundreds of beverages—including craft beer, spirits, ciders, meads and non-alcoholic options—plus food vendors and live entertainment.
AMA members can save 30% on general admission tickets when purchased online using the promo code AMA30 (discount available until April 30).
A Festival for the Fam
If you’ve got some little ones who are looking for something to do this May, check out the International Children’s Festival of the Arts in St. Albert, just northwest of Edmonton. The 2026 edition takes place May 29 to June 1, and features live performances, interactive art, and hands-on activities for the little ones in your life. Kids can try their hands at everything from crafting and storytelling to movement and music!
Paws off to the Races
If your perfect day involves four-legged friends, Alberta has you covered this May! Just outside Calgary, the 10th Annual Chihuahua Races at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino on May 2 will see tiny competitors take to the track alongside live harness racing and celebrations in honour of the Kentucky Derby.
And later in the month in southeast Alberta, head to Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede for Pet Fest from May 23 to 26. Expect a community event packed with pet-focused vendors, activities, and lots of opportunities to spoil your furry besties.
