How to Save on Your Mexican Vacation

By Kellie Davenport

In many ways, Mexico is already a value-oriented destination, but there are still things you can do to make your travel dollar go even further—especially if you plan to stay at a resort. Consider these factors when booking and when you’re at your destination to get more bang for your buck.

BOOK EARLY
Ask your AMA Travel counsellor about the best time to book to score a good price. Last-minute sales may seem like deals, but there could be a reason why those places didn’t sell out in advance.

COMBINE AIR & HOTEL
Look for packages that include both—the better to maximize savings.

CONSIDER AMENITIES
Excursions can be costly. Instead, choose a resort with loads of complimentary on-site activities, like snorkeling, biking, water sports, cooking demos and craft classes. Alternatively, if you just want to chill on the beach, consider a resort with fewer amenities as they are often cheaper.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY VS. ADULTS ONLY
Even if you’re not travelling with tots, consider a family resort. Adults-only properties are generally pricier and many resort chains now offer adult-specific areas with a family-friendly price tag.

CHOOSE CHILDCARE
If you are taking the kids, check which resorts include gratis childcare or kids’ club activities to avoid babysitting bills.

GO OFF-PEAK
Book during Mexico’s travel shoulder season—mid-April to November—and you could score a week-long stay for up to 40 percent less.
