AMA News: Spring 2019

By Craig Moy

When it comes to fueling up, premium gasoline doesn’t lead to premium performance in most vehicles. Fewer than 20 percent of cars actually need higher-octane gas, but many drivers (of cars that don’t need premium fuel) still use it, despite the greater expense. A recent study by AAA found that pumping premium did not produce more horsepower, result in better fuel efficiency or reduce emissions in vehicles for which “regular” fuel is sufficient. (Slight performance enhancements were noted in certain vehicles when they were towing or hauling cargo, but these improvements didn’t offset the higher cost of premium gas.) So follow your owner’s manual: If it doesn’t specifically say that your car requires premium gas, regular is right on the money.

You’ve worked hard to build a legacy for your family. You love volunteering in your community. And your family is so proud that your backyard—with the huge pool you installed last year—has become the neighbourhood hangout. But bad things sometimes happen. If they do, personal umbrella coverage is a simple add-on to your home insurance policy that provides an extra layer of protection. It supplements your current home and auto insurance by providing higher liability limits if you accidentally injure someone, damage their property, or if you face an unexpected lawsuit.

AMA news red panda licence plate

Monica Zeniuk loves red pandas, the distinctive ring-tailed mammals native to southwestern China. She loves them so much, in fact, that she and her husband adopted in perpetuity the Edmonton Valley Zoo’s red panda exhibit. Zeniuk has been assisting at the exhibit for the past seven years; her efforts (at the zoo and elsewhere) were recently recognized with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, Canada’s highest award for volunteers. So when the longtime AMA member decided to get a personalized licence plate for her new red convertible, the choice was easy: REDPNDA. Register for a personalized plate at any AMA centre.

And whatever your plate, keep it up to date. Sign up online to have your vehicle registration renew automatically, or
visit an AMA centre. The start of your last name determines your registration’s expiry.

Aspiring drivers can practice for the Class 7 Learner’s Licence test as many times as they like with the AMA Learner’s Practice Exam. Available online and in our app for Android and Apple devices, it randomly asks 30 driving-skills and road-rules questions—with new ones added regularly— from every category of the Alberta Driver’s Handbook. It’s a great way to gain confidence before taking the official Class 7 test at any AMA centre.

Registration is now open for our summer Driver’s Ed classes—and spaces are filling up fast. AMA has trained more than 850,000 drivers over 80 years; we’re a leader in teaching the safest, most up-to-date techniques in our classrooms and online. Members get discounts of up to $140 on new driver programs, and AMA Driver Education graduates get up to $200 off their AMA Auto Insurance policy. Register now to reserve your summer-session spot.

Let’s face it: Winter driving likely took a toll on your vehicle’s battery, especially if it was already nearing the end of its lifespan. Think your battery’s on its last legs? Call CAA Battery Service* to get it tested for free. If you need a replacement, we can install a CAA Premium Battery on the spot—backed by an industry-leading warranty.

Let everyone on the road know exactly who you’re cheering for by registering for an Edmonton Oilers or Calgary Flames specialty licence plate. Now available through AMA centres, a logo-emblazoned plate is a perfect gift to yourself and your vehicle—or give one to a friend or family member as a collectible to hang on their wall. A portion of the one-time cost ($84.95, plus applicable registration fees) goes to support Alberta charities.

AMA news shredding events

AMA’s member-exclusive shredding events get bigger each year, with good reason. More and more Albertans are proactively guarding against identity theft, and destroying no-longer-needed personal documents is an effective first step. Last year, AMA members brought 229 tons of documents to be shredded—while also donating 21,674 pounds of food and $46,690 to local food banks. Let’s make the haul at our April and May 2019 events even bigger!

Warmer weather in April (we hope!) means it’s time to take off your winter tires. Avoid a hassle by making an appointment at Kal Tire. AMA members save 10% on service and parts, plus 5% on tires—should you need a new set.
