Holiday Entertaining Guide: How to Prep Your Home for a Party

By AMA Staff

The first step in prepping your home for a party is ensuring it’s safe for all your guests. Follow these handy tips for a safe soirée.

1 A few weeks before the party, make any minor home repairs that you’ve been putting off: Secure loose railings and banisters; check for loose or uneven floorboards, which could be tripping hazards; and ensure all bathroom plumbing is running smoothly.

2 Check that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

3 Make sure exterior lights function and add additional walkway lighting for dark winter evenings.

4 Remove icicles from eavestroughs and roof to avoid potentially dangerous falling ice.

5 Clear sidewalks of snow and spread salt on your driveway, walkways and all outdoor steps. Apply salt about an hour before guests arrive to allow it to break up any ice.

6 Tuck away valuables and breakable items behind locked doors. Mark off-limits areas with signs.

7 If the fireplace will be on, designate a family member to be fire warden to monitor the flames and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.

WE’VE GOT YOUR COVERED
Even with thorough planning and safety measures, accidents can still happen. And you don’t want to be on the hook if you’re found legally responsible for damages or injuries sustained at your party. A home insurance policy with AMA Insurance covers you, regardless of the size of your gathering. To check your policy or get a quote on new coverage, call 1-800-615-5897 or visit an AMA centre.
